Hist 494 Individual Research Projects

Hist 494 is a two semester opportunity for advanced history majors to make rather independent research progress into their own topics.

The first semester (one credit) asks a student to assemble and conduct a systematic review of the topic and to gain familiarity with the important research that has already been conducted by specialists.  A Geography Exercise and a Chronological Exercise will help situate the events of the topic, and will draw the student into a more focused engagement with a specific question or debate.  The most important component of this first semester will be the completion of an "Annotated Bibliography of Secondary and Primary Sources."  All together, these exercises will prepare the student for a second semester of focused research and writing, culminating in the development of a research paper. This paper will be distributed to History faculty and to other advanced students in the program. Then the students will present their research papers at the end of the second semester.

Students have worked on widely varied topics with most of the Professors in the History Program. Students working with me will probably be involved in selected topics of American and Global History especially involving civil rights, philosophy, and intellectual activities.
